The Microsoft-OpenAI marriage of convenience appears headed for the rocks. There are many good reasons for Microsoft to end its partnership with Sam Altman’s asset bubble, but the one they’ve chosen is bizarre.

The tech partners’ current contract says when OpenAI’s systems reach “artificial general intelligence,” or AGI, ChatGPT’s parent will be able to limit Microsoft’s access to future technology. Microsoft wants to change that. AGI is the theoretical point at which generative AI systems achieve humanlike intelligence.

The likelihood of this happening at all, never mind anytime soon, is staggeringly small. Remember that AI can’t even do agents yet. Currently, AI agents only have a 58% success rate on simple tasks and a 35% success rate on multi-step ones.
